Dummy Cartridges / Blanks
Blanks or dummy cartridges are a special type of ammunition, which is used to simulate firing without the actual bullet. Dummy cartridges contain gun powder and no bullet so that when they are fired, they create a flash and make an explosive sound. Blanks are often used in a number of situations including:
- Army and police training courses
- Function testing firearms
- Signaling at the start of a race
- Salutes, such as at military ceremonies
- Special effects for movies or plays
- Reenactments, such as civil war reenactments
Rimfire ammunition achieves ignition when the firing pin strikes the rim of the base of the cartridge. Essentially, a with a rimfire cartridge the rim is a widened percussion cap which contains the primer. A benefit to buying rimfire cartridges is that it is easy and cheap to manufacture and therefore available in bulk at low prices.
There are several downsides to using rimfire cartridges. One of these is that rimfire ammunition cannot withstand high pressures and is therefore typically limited to smaller cartridge sizes. Another downside to rimfire ammunition is that unlike with centerfire ammunition, the cartridges cannot be reused. After firing a rimfire cartridge, the head is damaged from the impact of the firing pin and the cartridge cannot be reloaded.
Centerfire ammunition is designed with the primer located in the center of the base of the cartridge. When this type of cartridge is fired, the firing pin must, therefore, strike the exact center of the base. Centerfire ammo is the most commonly used type of ammunition for modern pistols, rifles, and shotguns because the primer is a separate and replaceable component. This feature leads to the major advantage to using centerfire ammunition versus rimfire ammunition, which is that centerfire cartridges can be reused by replacing the primer, gunpowder, and projectile. This reusability makes centerfire cartridges convenient for shooters with rifles that require obsolete or hard to find cartridges.
Another benefit of centerfire ammunition is that is can hold higher pressures than rimfire cartridges of the same size. This makes cartridges more powerful and more efficient. Therefore, centerfire ammunition is often used when hunting larger game, such as deer and bison.
Shotgun shells are a type ammunition that is specifically designed for use with shotguns. The typical shotgun cartridge is a shell made of plastic or paper filled with small lead or lead substitute pellets. Depending on the size of the pellets that are inside of the shell, shotgun ammunition is either categorized as being birdshot or buckshot. Birdshots consist of a number of small pellets designed to have a wide spread. Buckshots are more powerful for hunting larger game and home self defense. These cartridges are filled with larger lead pellets designed to cause more damage and penetrate the target with more force.
